Today, in the fast moving world in which we live, we find ourselves disagreeing with other folks because their agenda or politics are different. But, their ideas are not who they are…….”They are just ideas”.
I always remind myself of Justice Scalia’s interview last year on 60 Minutes. One of the talking heads was interviewing Supreme Court Justice, Antonin Scalia, and he asked the judge, (and I paraphrase here) “Who is your best friend on the Court?” Judge Scalia said, “Oh, I like them all but I really enjoy talking to Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg!”
The interviewer said, “What do you mean?”
Justice Scalia said “Well, we get together at least once a week, we have lunch together and I like talking to her; I like some of her ideas.”
The interviewer continued, “Justice Scalia, it’s no secret you’re the most conservative Justice we have and Justice Ginsburg has often been characterized as the most liberal.”
The interviewer continued, “Don’t you and she argue about her liberal concepts and ideas that are so different than your conservative position on so many issues.?
Justice Scalia said, “Well sure we may argue, but don’t forget you’re talking about her ideas; I don’t dislike people because I disagree with their ideas….after all, their ideas are not who they are….they’re just ideas.”
Again, in this ever changing world we live in, we might disagree with others on many issues, but always remember…..”They are just ideas….and I agree.” We cannot be dismissive of others just because their ideas are different than ours.
