MURRIETA APPROVES COMPREHENSIVE STRATEGY FOR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
While many cities in California focus their economic development efforts on attracting new retail businesses to their communities, the Murrieta City Council has approved a comprehensive approach to economic development. Each year, the City Council establishes its goals and objectives. As in previous years, the Council has established its number one priority as “aggressively pursuing measurable economic development.” While retail development is certainly important in order to provide new services and sources of municipal revenues for Murrieta, the Council’s goal is to pursue a “broad approach to Economic Development so as to diversify our economic base and encourage the private sector to create new higher end jobs in Murrieta for our residents, ”according to Murrieta Mayor Kelly Bennett.
The City is particularly interested in promoting Murrieta as a site for technology, medical device, health care, higher education, biosciences, greentech, cleantech, aerospace, research and development and other high end companies, corporate offices, and manufacturing operations. According to Murrieta Councilmember Doug McAllister, “the City is strategically located midway between San Diego and the Los Angeles/Orange County metroplex. With the lack of land in the neighboring coastal counties, Murrieta is positioning itself to become the future business hub for Southern California.”
The City is developing the infrastructure needed to attract developers for new corporate and technology parks in the North Murrieta Technology Corridor, along I-215 adjacent to the new Loma Linda University Medical Center-Murrieta campus. The City is also focused on business park and office development in Murrieta’s Golden Triangle North , which is located close to the junction of I-15 and I-215 freeways -- north of Murrieta Hot Springs Road and in the South Murrieta Business Corridor along both sides of I-15.
The City is currently in the process of building a new freeway interchange at I-15/Clinton Keith Road and a new 4-lane arterial road, Whitewood Road – with the objective of encouraging the earlier development of the the North Murrieta Technology Corridor along the east side of I-215 between Clinton Keith Road and Scott Road. These two major capital projects will be completed in early/mid 2011.
The City is also working in close partnership with the Riverside County Transportation Commission to begin work on the widening of the I-215 freeway in Murrieta between the I-15 “Murrieta Y” and Scott Road. This project will provide for an additional lane in each direction on I-215 and will provide the infrastructure needed to prepare North Murrieta for corporate park development.
The City is working with its development partners in the South Murrieta Business Corridor to create a Community Facilities District which will provide infrastructure needed to open this area for office, business park and retail development. The South Murrieta project will be anchored by the Murrieta Education Center, two 5-story Class A office and classroom buildings being developed by an Orange County developer on the west side of I-15, close to the its junction with I-15 in Murrieta.
Murrieta Councilmember Rick Gibbs stated that “the vision for Murrieta is to become a major business and corporate hub for Southwest Riverside County and nearby North San Diego County, comparable to nearby Rancho Bernardo in San Diego and to reduce the over 30,000 daily commutes by Murrieta and Temecula residents to San Diego.”
