Jeremy Clevenger, Multi0tasker Extraordinaire

By Karen Robertson

What’s the difference between a professional golfer and golf professional?

A professional golfer does one thing really well ― plays golf.

A Laptop ComputerA golf professional does dozens of things that are necessary to keep a golf club running smoothly. Jeremy Clevenger, Bear Creek’s own Director of Golf, is a PGA Golf Professional and more. With a degree in Economics, a minor in Political Science and Spanish from the University of Arizona, and a passion for golf, he is the glue that holds everything together.

Jeremy manages the tee sheets, teaches classes, plans and runs tournaments, orders goods and oversees the pro shop, manages 15 employees, coordinates fundraising events, and works with the superintendent on course setup. Anything that has to do with golf is his responsibility.

During our interview he excused himself to answer his cell phone. A tournament was in progress and the call was from one of the golfers asking for a ruling. I asked about it.
“The ground is so wet after all the rains that one player’s ball landed with such force it embedded itself. He was wondering if he could take it out and drop it on solid ground without losing a shot.”  A quick, “yes” made the golfer happy, tournament play resumed, and so did our interview.

Jeremy knew from the beginning of college that he wanted sports to be a part of his career and being at Bear Creek is perfect for him. He speaks highly of his staff, the environment, and the satisfaction in being able to do what he loves. “I am blessed to make this my home away from home. It is a beautiful place. I have the best crew in the world  ― they are wonderful people. They do everything possible to make sure members are treated well.”

Becoming a golf professional is a tremendous challenge. Three years as an apprentice followed by a series of exams is just the beginning. The apprentice has to play 36 holes with an evaluator to prove his ability to get a target score, and then more written exams. Once the certification is earned, the PGA Golf Professional is required to take continuing education courses on a regular basis to keep current and maintain the status.

Besides having this distinction, Jeremy also came to Bear Creek with years of experience at Yorba Linda Country Club, Mesa Verde, and Marbella. Bear Creek is fortunate to have Jeremy Clevenger. He delights in his work and his enthusiasm is contagious.

2nd Annual USO & Jim Whamond Golf Classic

Dreamweaver CS3The 1st annual USO & Jim Whamond Military Dedication Golf Tournament was a major success and the largest golf tournament fund raiser last year for the USO-Greater Los Angeles Area. The local classic is conducted to support the USO troop support activities at the Ontario Airport.

The 200+ volunteers supported over 20,000 service men and women and their families with the funds donated by the classic participants this past year. The number of military visitors this year has grown by over 30%. The center provides a home away from home while traveling through the Ontario Airport. With the current foul weather, many of them have to remain one or two nights to catch rescheduled flights. All services are provided gratis to the travelers.

The 2nd Annual USO & Jim Whamond Memorial Military Dedication Golf Classic is scheduled for April 12, 2010 at the Bear Creek Golf Club. The scramble sign-in begins at 8:30 AM and the shot gun start will be at 10:00 AM. Entry fee is $175 per person and includes: Golf, Tee Prizes, Continental Breakfast, Range Balls, Lunch, Dinner, and Awards. An active duty military member is expected to be added to each foursome. It should be a great day.

Various level sponsors are invited to help in assuring a fun and successful event and public individuals and organizations are invited to play in the event.
